HEARING THE PATIENTS VOICE - MODELS FOR LISTENING

The CPC workshop at ICS annual meeting in San Fransisco 2009 highlighted some of the models of the worldwide programs that have been effective at focusing on the need of patients, including all age groups. Specifically programs for children and indigenous populations in Australia was in focus. Chairman of the workshop was Dr Vasan Satya Srini.
The CPC workshop also highlighted the first World Continence Week held in 2009.

WORLD CONTINENCE WEEK JUNE 2009, A SUCCESSFUL GLOBAL EVENT

The ICS Continence Promotion Committee launched a very successful global event:
World Continence Week (WCW) from June 22 to June 28, 2009. The aim of World Continence Week is to raise awareness of bladder and bowel health issues and improve the lives of people with incontinence worldwide by drawing the attention of the general public and the global medical community to the life situation of people with incontinence. During WCW, events were organised by many CPC Continence Organisations in several countries.

THE FIRST WORLD CONTINENCE DAY ANNOUNCED IN CAIRO OCTOBER 24, 2008.

The first World Continence Day was announced in Cairo at October 24, 2008 during the Continence Promotion Committee's 2nd Public Forum by Sherif Mourad, 2008 Annual Meeting Chair and Diane Newman, CPC Chair.

CHALLENGES TO CONTINENCE PROMOTION IN THE MIDDLE EAST

At ICS 2008 in Cairo a workshop was held presenting cultural barriers and  continence awareness in the Middle East. The workshop was chaired by Diaa E.E. Rizk, Egypt, who held a workshop introduction. Speakers were Ahmed Al-Badr, Saudi Arabia, Vasan S Srini, India, Diane Newman, USA and Diaa E.E. Rizk. During the meeting the Public Forum in Rotterdam was reviewed  and the World Continence week, initiated by the Continence Promotion Committee of ICS, was launched.

THE FIRST CPC SUPPORTED PUBLIC FORUM
was successfully arranged in connection with the ICS 2007 meeting in Rotterdam!

"OUTCOMES OF CONTINENCE AWARENESS PROGRAMMES"
Continence organisations networking                                                                                         This CPC workshop was held at ICS 2007 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
There was a focus on determing outcomes of continence awareness programmes. The meeting chair person, Deborah Gordon, Continence Advisory Service of Western Australia, was presenting "Research from the health promotion litterature on health seeking behavior", ie. how do we raise awareness of continence and encourage people to seek help?
Jacquie Lodewyke,Continence Foundation of Australia, presented       "Measuring the outcome of  continence awareness programs". Ian Holland, Continence Foundation UK, presented the organisation and planning of the "Continence Awareness Week" September 2007 in UK and Christa Thiel, German Continence Society, presented "Public Forums 1990 - 2007".

The Continence Promotion Committee had its own booth at the ICS exhibition, which provided an appreciated opportunity for continence organisation representatives from all over the world to meet during the week.

"MODELS FOR PUBLIC FORUMS ON CONTINENCE AWARENESS"

Different models of public forums held around the world were presented at the annual CPC workshop at ICS 2006 in Christchurch, New Zealand.
Diane Newman, the CPC chair
person, presented an overview of CPC public Forum initiatives to set the stage of the meeting.
Interesting presentations were made by Jan Zander, New Zealand Continence Association, Deborah Gordon, Continence Advicing Service of Western
Australia, Nancy Mueller, National Association for Incontinence, Jacquie Lodewyke, Continence Foundation of Australia, Rani Vadiveloo, Society for Continence Singapore, Tamara Dickinson, Society for Urologic Nurses & Associates U.S. and Ilan Gruenwald, Israel.

The Continence Promotion Committee

"CURRENT INITIATIVES FOR INCREASING CONTINENCE AWARENESS"
 
was the theme of the Continence Promotion   Committee Workshop meeting of the International Continence Society in Montreal August 31, 2005.
There was a big interest in this meeting and many delagates participated.

Chairperson Diane Newman opened the workshop presenting the ICI "Continence Awareness" recommendations, which is the first chapter in the new edition of the ICI "Continence Bible".
There are now 47 organizations in 33 countries linked to the CPC. Two of these organizations presented their participation in Global Initiatives, initiated by the industry:
 - Canadian Continence Foundation, Frankie Bates
 - Continence Foundation UK, Judith Wardle
Finally there was a discussion, lead by Diane Newman, about CPC issues and future. Several companies have shown interest in creating similiar initiatives, as above, together with Continence organisations. The conclusion was that the global initiatives will evolve into a joint "Continence: Bladder Health Campaign", conducted by CPC.

The new patient founded association, the World Federation of Incontinence Patients (WFIP) was present at the workshop. It was decided that the CPC Committee would embrace the WFIP to collaborate with them as there are common goals and objectives.

CONTINENCE PROMOTION COMMITTEE WORKSHOP IN PARIS AUGUST 24, 2004

At the joint meeting of the International Continence Society (ICS) and the International Uro Gynecological Association (IUGA) 23-27 August in Paris a CPC workshop was held.
There were presentations from national organizations in US - NAFC by Nancy Muller and France – The French Continence Organization by Michael Lemoine.
The CPC Chairman Diane Newman presented the results of the 2004 National Organization
Survey, which was presented at the 3rd ICI meeting in Monaco,  June 2004.

THE  INTERNATIONAL CONSULTATION ON INCONTINENCE, MONACO, JUNE 26-29, 2004.

Twenty-five expert committees evaluated the breadth and depth of the incontinence problem worldwide. They covered issues ranging from the prevalence of bladder control problems to continence promotion and to the economic and quality of life impact bladder control problems have on a local, regional, national and global level. In each committee the published evidence was reviewed and presented for discussion to the Consultation.

The goal of the Consultation is to both raise awareness and reach a consensus on universal treatment guidelines. The establishment of guidelines is a crucial step in the effort to identify and treat the millions of people currently suffering from bladder control problems throughout the world. The consultation, in addition to setting guidelines will also prioritise a research programme for the next five years.

The International Consultation on Incontinence has included a committee on “Promotion, organisation and education in continence care”. On an international basis the International Continence Society, ICS should continue to facilitate and hasten collaborations enabling developments in continence care worldwide.

NETWORKING MEETING FOR NATIONAL CONTINENCE ORGANISATIONS IN ITALY

2700 health care experts from around the world assembled for the annual meeting of the International Continence Society, ICS, in Florence, Italy, on October 5-9, 2003. 

This year the Continence Promotion Committee celebrated it's 10 Anniversary. It was celebrated with a workshop, a fair and the launch of a special 10th anniversary souvenir edition of the newsletter Continence Worldwide. There was also a keynote presentation by David Fonda to the plenum of the conference this year to celebrate the work of the Continence Promotion Committee and future directions. read more

UNDERSTANDING THE PSYCHOLOGY OF THE STIGMA OF INCONTINENCE

The Simon Foundation for Continence was sponsoring an international conference, in Chicago, June 25 - 27, 2003 to celebrate the launch of Simon's third decade. The conference draw upon the knowledge from many disciplines such as health psychology and medical anthropology, to better understand how stigma can be removed from incontinence, The conference was co-chaired by Alan Cottenden, PhD.(U.K.), Professor Christine Norton (U.K.), Anita Saltmarch, RN, MSN (Canada) and Cheryle Gartley, President and Founder, the Simon Foundation for Continence (U.S.)  read more 

RECENT ADVANCES IN FEMALE UROLOGY, URINARY INCONTINENCE, NEUROUROLOGY AND AGEING PELVIC FLOOR IN INDIA

An international conference will focus on solving the problems of female urology and the pelvic floor. Many leading experts from the Asia-Pacific region, the USA and Europe will be sharing their experience during the event. It is organised by the Asia Pacific Continence Advisory Board, the Asian Society for Female Urology and the Indian Continence Foundation and is coming up in Bangalore, India, November 14-17, 2003.  read more

THE ROLE OF GENERAL PRACTITIONERS IN THE MANAGEMENT OF INCONTINENCE 

Each year at the meeting of the International Continence Society, the Continence Promotion Committee holds a workshop. The last year the theme was around the role of the General Practitioners, in the assessment and management of incontinence.
