The Austrian Medical Society for
Help with Incontinence has 303 members: 174 doctors, 70
registered nurses, 10 physiotherapists, 33 from other
professions (e.g. pharmacists) and 16 incontinent people -
who are also allowed to be members. In order to coordinate the
activities of the society, the Board has met five times and
the circle of supporters four times. In its two agencies, in
Innsbruck (Headquarters) and in Vienna, all together 843
consultations for incontinence problems took place, 578 by
phone, 205 by letters and 160 by personal counselling.
Twenty-two seminars for doctors and nurses and 19 pelvic
floor training courses for prophylaxis and treatment of
incontinence were organized around Austria. The 7th Annual
Meeting of our society took place in Klagenfurt on November
29 with 220 participants.
The newsletter is sent out twice a year to inform our members about
the society's activities and to update their knowledge about the
management of incontinence by including references and articles of
interest in regards to urinary and faecal incontinence. The first
postgraduate course to train nurses to become Continence and Stoma
Advisers finished in October 1996. It was a success and 15 registered
nurses got their diplomas. A second course has started with 13
participants and will be finished by October this year.
One of the aims of our society is to make incontinent people aware that help is possible and to get professionals who deal with incontinent people interested in this field in order to improve the situation of incontinent people in our country. Our collaboration with the media was again intensified.
The Austrian Medical Society for Help with Incontinence contributes also to the journal which is published by the German incontinence organisation. Two pages of this journal, which is published four times a year and distributed all over the German-speaking area, deal with the activities our society.
The 8th Annual Meeting 1998 of the society will be held in Bregenz (province of Vorariberg) on October 10. The topic will be "Incontinence - a challenge for doctors, nurses and physiotherapists".
