ROYAL COLLEGE OF NURSING CONTINENCE CARE FORUM

The Forum has been very active over the last year, with its membership now exceeding 6,500 nurses, each receiving two newsletters per year, updating them on Forum activities and recent developments in continence care.

The focus for the last year has mainly been a political one, following the acceptance of two resolutions at the RCN Congress in Harrogate in April 1997.

The first asked for Government support for the principle that "any patient has the right to assessment, treatment and products free at point of use" and the second for "equitable access to specialist nursing care for both private and NHS patients".

The two-day Conference in Sheffield, with just over 100 delegates, continued the theme of "The Cost of Incontinence" - to the patient, nurse and NHS.

On the education front, the RCN have run regional study days with the programme practice pack, supported National Continence Day's pelvic floor awareness campaign and published an updated version of "Male Catheterisation Guidelines".

The RCN has actively lobbied the Government on the supply of continence services, issued a Briefing Paper on the "Cost of Continence" in October 1997 and actively supported the launch of the Continence Charter at the House of Commons.
